Speak to me

Today someone told me a story about a child who hadn't started speaking, yet was perfectly able to communicate. Instead of using words he created movements, and actions to describe things and people. The way he had picked up on a characteristic or mannerism and used this one thing to describe his family was, to my mind, amazingly creative and inventive. The words we use do not go anywhere near to descibe the things we want to say, they are inadequate and fall far short as a way of summing up what it is we want to say. Where as, when I place a mark or scratch onto the painting, I don't need to translate that into a word in order to say this is what it's about, it just is.
